Musa Basjoo Banana quickly creates a bold tropical screen with enormous green leaves rising from a vigorous clump. Although grown for ornamental foliage rather than edible fruit, it is one of the hardiest bananas and can return after winter when its roots are protected.

Botanical name: Musa basjoo

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Shelter the large leaves from strong wind to reduce tearing.
  • USDA zones: 5 to 10 with winter protection in colder areas
  • Mature size: About 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide in Zone 8b
  • Foliage: Very large, paddle-shaped bright green leaves
  • Flower or ornamental feature: Towering tropical foliage and a fast-growing screening effect
  • Bloom season: Flowers are uncommon on young plants and are not the primary ornamental feature
  • Water: High. Provide rich soil and consistent moisture during warm weather for fastest growth.
  • Growth habit: Upright, suckering clump
  • Landscape uses: Tropical gardens, privacy screens, poolside beds, large containers, specimen plantings, and dramatic backdrops
  • Deer tolerance: Not considered reliably deer resistant.

In Zone 8b, mulch the root zone heavily after frost and cut back damaged stems. Established clumps commonly return from the roots in spring. Available for local pickup at Towns Edge Nursery. Product images are representative illustrations of the mature plant and do not show the exact plant in stock.
